Apparently hell has frozen over again. The Eagles are touring again. What’s that you say, didn’t the Eagles do a “Farewell Tour” in 1994 to promote their new album “Hell Freezes Over”? They are now promoting their 2007 Album “Long Road Out Of Eden” and have Concert Dates January thru July 2009.
I don’t know about you, but I had my fill of “Hotel Calfornia” back in 1976 when it came out. For me, hearing it is worse than nails on a chalkboard. Nuff said. Just in case you like nails on a chalkboard, enjoy:
As I recall the ticket prices for the 1994 tour were outrageous. Ticket prices for the current tour range from $75-$201. Ticket brokers are selling premium seats for well over $600.00.
I have no need to see a bunch of geriatrics trying to rekindle their youth from the 70’s. Maybe now that I’m in my 40’s I’m ‘over’ wanting to see my favorite bands live. I don’t think that’s really true. I would accompany my kids to a concert, provided they weren’t going to see The Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus. I would go see Third Eye Blind, The Killers, Coldplay, Nickelback, All American Rejects. I would definitely go to see one of 'todays' bands.
What I think IS true is that I wouldn’t go to a concert for a group that I enjoyed ‘back in the day’. I want to remember them in their glory. Not gray haired, wrinkled, sagging jowls, pudgy, off key and unable to remember the lyrics to their old hits.
Know what I mean?
Whatever happened to old rockers and stars becoming recluses? Ahh, the good old days.

I second your emotion there: why do these old dudes feel the need to try to croon onstage anymore? Have they run out of money??
ReplyDeleteThis is just slightly different from maybe going to watch the 'Stones, who at least didn't quit then get back together... but still,,, Mick Jagger turns 66 in a few months, and the band is still doing shows... it's different having a 20-something moaning about not getting satisfaction, but a 60+ year old? Hmmm...
Greetings Lola,
ReplyDeleteI am into recycling but when it comes to music I think evolving might be a better route for these guys if they still want to play.
hey, I passed along that nice award you gave me. Thanks again.
kim
hi. nice blog. exchange links? =)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't leave my house to see any of the acts you listed.
ReplyDeleteBut the Eagles? Holy schmoly. They still sound FABULOUS and last time I saw Glenn Frey, he looked as yummy as he did "back in the day." Unlike the Rolling Stones, the Eagles are as relevant today as they were in the 70's when my roommates and I couldn't get enough of them. I could never get tired of Hotel California or any of their classics. I have been known to pop in an Eagles CD and totally embarrass my kids by rocking out to, for instance, Life in the Fast Lane.
And aging better than a bottle of fine wine? Sweet Baby James himself. Da man. The coolest dude on the planet. A voice like no other that just gets richer and more nuanced as the years go by.
As a musician, I can tell you that they might be enticed to return to the stage by the $$. But any true artist will tell you that they live or die by making art. I play ALL the time. I could never stop playing music under any circumstance. Whether playing for money or not, I will be on stage somewhere, sometime for the rest of my life. Until I'm just too decrepit to blow into my flute or piccolo, tickle the ivories, pluck the strings or warble into the microphone. I'm sure that artists like the Eagles feel exactly the same way.
Whaaa Whaaa Whaaaa ;(
ReplyDeleteI saw Joe Walsh in concert a couple of years ago. It was like being at a been there/done that reunion of aging, balding, middle-aged people with pot bellies and scars from rehab (did I miss anything?).
This is why I would never see a "Led Zeppelin" reunion. First, it would not BE Led Zeppelin, it would be only 3 original members, and second, I was lucky enough to see them in both in their heyday AND the height of my fandom. I have my memories.
ReplyDeleteThe other thing I won't do is see a band at a huge venue. Give me a small club or bar where I don't need a Jumbotron to see the band.
Let it rest, Eagles!

ReplyDeleteIf any of the 70's or 80's bands really reinvented themselves that would maybe be something else. But they don't Duran Duran toured last year with a new album, but did they really reinvent themselves? (Not a fan, just an example.) They didn't, it's the same old sound.
JHS,
I can understand as a musician the wanting to play, but for some of these bands it seems embarrassing.
I AM Harriet,
Joe Walsh? Oh my.
JD,
You saw a Led Zepplin concert back in the day. Wow. I bow to you. That had to be awesome. Back in the day I saw Johnny Cougar (before John Mellencamp thought a stage name was insulting and embarrasing), 38 Special, Rush and AC/DC. I also saw many acts that are too embarrassing to mention, so I won't.
Foreigner is on The Ellen DeGeneres
ReplyDeleteShow today promoting their album "No End In Sight: The Very Best of Foreigner" They sang "Feels Like the First Time" and...it didn't. They also closed the show with "Jukebox Hero". I'm hoping those weren't 70's wigs.
