Colonoscopy Sweepstakes - Yes, It's For Real!

I thought my insomnia was making me loopy. For the second early morning in a row I have seen this commercial:

I was thinking, they can't possibly be serious. But they are! Check out www.cbs.com/cbs_cares. A contest to win a Colonoscopy in New York. I don't know if you've had a Colonoscopy before, but I've had 3 so far. The first time I had several pre-cancerous polyps removed. I'm probably due for another. If you've had one, you know the er, ah, "preparation" part is not fun.
"This is an actual sweepstakes and, if you are the grand prize winner, we will fly you and a companion to New York where you will receive a free colonoscopy. You will also be given three nights' accommodation in a suite at the luxurious Loews Regency Hotel, which will include the night before you are "awarded" the colonoscopy."
So, according to the website you will get to stay in a luxurious suite. I hardly see the point of that considering you will only be seeing one room of that suite on your "preparation" night. You might as well stay at Motel 6 the first night and pocket the difference! In reality you'll likely be getting to enjoy only the 3rd night, since the 2nd night you will likely be very uncomfortable due to all the er, ah excess air. If you win, it will be free pass to pass gas in New York! (Oh I'm so sorry, I haven't had any sleep and my puns are bad.)

All joking aside, a Colonoscopy is very important for detecting cancer early. I've submitted my entry, have you?

  4. Actually, it doesn't surprise me. It was Katic Couric who started the national attention on colon cancer when her husband Jay died of colon cancer at a very young age. Katie had a colonoscopy herself which was filmed for broadcast when she was on the Today Show at NBC and has been promoting colonoscopies ever since. Now that she anchors the news desk at CBS I guess she was able to convince them of the wisdom of this contest.

  5. This sounds like a complete pain in the ass...I had to do it, sorry. It's always good to take care of your health and get all the tune ups and testing you are supposed to. I haven't hit the colonoscopy milestone yet, but I've certainly had the girls squished like pancakes.

  6. @ Blueviolet - Tell me about it. The last time I had it done there was a pill available instead of the nasty drink but my doc prescribed the nasty drink anyway. I swear docs just like to torture for the sport of it.

@ Goddess - I agree, it has to be the weirdest.

    @ Femin Susan - Thanks.

@ Patricia - I'm not sure if Katie Couric lobbied for it or not. CBS Cares is running a number of psa type ads. This morning I also saw one with Mark Harmon for Bipolar Disorder.

@ melissa - Oh don't remind me. I get the girls squished in 2 weeks. Way past due, I've never had it done. Not at all looking forward to it.

  7. What's the preparation? I'm 24. Am I still a little young for a colonoscopy?

  8. @ Akirah - The ah, preparation is the day before. You cannot eat anything (except jello or broth up until a certain time) and you spend the day having to drink a gallon of very nasty tasting liquid that is basically a laxative. Let's just say that I'm not exaggerating at all when I say you will spend the day in only one room. It's not very pleasant, but thankfully it only needs to be done every 3 to 10 years, depending on the findings. I don't mean to scare anyone off, having the procedure is definitely better than discovering you have cancer and it's too late to treat it.

  9. I know it is an importnat thing for people to do, but a sweepstakes? Seriously? I think a few PSAs maybe, but not a sweepstakes. Also, I agree with you about the suite. Does it really matter where you are the night before? sheeezzzee...

  10. This falls into the category that so many things do these days, the "is this for real" category. It's definitely getting harder and harder to tell. My husband goes for his first one in a couple of weeks. I practically had to drag him to the doctor.

  11. @ Ken @ Dad to two - How about giving them the free colonoscopy and THEN a nice trip? Seriously, how do you enjoy that first day of preparation? That's just dumb.

@ Margo - Cudos to you to drag your husband to the doc. Now that's a caring spouse!
