What's Wrong With Our Youth/Get Off My Lawn

Ok, I'm old, it's official. I've joined the "Get Off My Lawn" Gang. When I type the next sentence, you will get it.

What the is the matter with our youth today? Whatever happened to trash-talking or ignoring that former friend that did you wrong? Is it really necessary to escalate things to physical violence? This is 2009, not caveman days.

Bond Set For Teens in Videotaped Beating.

The beating, hair cutting and car cigarette lighter burning took place in Park Forest, IL. They burned her face and arms with a car cigarette lighter. She also suffered a concussion.

This is appalling. I heard on Saturday night's news that there is talk that the beating was because the victim started dating a boyfriend of one of the assailants. Perhaps he just wasn't that into you little Miss Scissor wielding, teen? Whatever happened to trash-talking and ignoring? Is it really necessary to escalate things to physical violence? This teen is going to have scars on her face for life. If she wants her appearance "normal", she is going to have to wear hair extensions until her hair grows out.

  1. Holy crap.

Seriously, today everything is so over the top. Everything is seen as disrespecting another on a level that so far exceeds the reality of the situation. Maybe it's because we spend so much time celebrating every single tiny accomplishment, that an inflated degree of self-importance develops.

  2. What is the world turning to? It scares whenever I read about stuff like this.

Thanks for sharing. I shall say a prayer for the poor victim.

  3. That is just so sad. I don't understand the mentality behind something like this.

  4. It was simply crazy to resort to such violence. We had several such cases reported here in Singapore too. A few of the cases of beating happened because of a simple staring situation; one party just didn't like the other party staring at her.

  6. We had a similar incident here. Mom had arranged a fight at lunch time in a park by the school. Mom picked up kids and drove them to the park. The fight was video taped and youtubed. The biggest user of the video was the local 2nd rate TV news who received bookoo ratings as a result. They didn't even block out the faces of the 14 year old bystanders. duh.

  7. Forget trash talking how about just moving on? But a lot comes down to how they are raised.. if the parents do not step up when they are children, if they are surrounded by people who stem the flow but don't want to make real change and if they are not taught from early on that actions have consequences.. this is what happens...

  8. I really loved this post. I do remember that being on the news. That poor girl didn't deserve that beating! I don't remember if the teens got sentenced or anything. But it's horrible when you see this stuff on TV. Stopping by from Harriet's Comment Challenge.

  9. I couldn't even watch the video--just your description was enough for me.

I'm scared for my daughter with all of this out there nowadays. You can't believe what we are going through because she got Valedictorian at her middle school. Oh, and there is a boy that likes her even though she doesn't like him anymore. Em's friend keeps trying to get him to like her, but it isn't working, so she is pissed at Em! And this was her best friend. It's ridiculous.

I'm with you in the gang--I keep saying "Turn that music down!" and "I can't tell the boys from the girls" like my Grandpa did. :)

  10. I'm with Lin, just your description was enough for me. I've seen enough of these videos on the news to last a lifetime. And girls! I guess I expect teenage boys to fight but why, all of a sudden, teenage girls and physical violence?

  11. That video is heartbreaking. What a shame this had to happen to her. I hope the little punks that did this get a long timeout in a locked facility.

    Have a terrific day. :)

  13. I can't watch the video either, it just bothers me too much.

More reason to homeschool for me! What on earth is going on with the kids today? (What happened to a good old fashioned fist fight? lol)

  14. It's not the first of its kind and I am afraid it won't be the last. I have no idea what has happened to this country. I know not all kids would behave that way, but we have, as a whole, become so complacent and just don't care about other people. I don't understand it. I hope those kids get punished terribly and I hope their parents add to it rather than say, "oh they didn't mean anything by it...."

And when will the stop being so dumb! I mean, if you are going to do this shit, don't video tape it! But then again, criminals in general, which these kids are, are stupid.

  18. @ Da Old Man - I think you may be right,

@ Veronica Lee - It IS very scary.

@ chicamom85 @ BK- It is very sad, to think that someone can think that this beating was an appropriate consequence for anything.

    @ Tina - It's gotten much worse.

@ Harriet - There was another similar case a few months ago in the north suburbs. Again videotaped.

@ Shauni - The sad part is that the parents are the ones that seem to be defending the assailants, saying that the victim stole a boyfriend.

@ Stacie - You may be thinking of another case, this one just recently happened .

@ Lin - I'm scared for my kids too. There is only so much you can prepare your kids for and as parents, who would ever think that other kids would do this?

    @ Patricia - It's just awful,

@ Sandee - This kids need to be made an example of and need to be punished to the full extent of the law.

@ Kelly B - I completely agree. There is no regard for human life anymore. I guess now criminals need proof to brag to their friends how tough they are.

  19. That is so awful. It reminds me of those cheerleaders who made national news last year. I agree, I don't know what is wrong with kids these days. Now I join the get off my lawn crowd.
