Cubs Home Opener - Go Cubs!

The Cubs go into their home opener with 4 Wins 2 Losses. Cubs won Sunday night 8 to 5. If you didn't watch the game, you missed an amazing catch by Reed Johnson (subbing for Milton Bradley). In the 5th inning Johnson robbed Prince Fielder of a home run. Johnson jumped up, reached his glove over the wall and grabbed it. Here is a link where you can watch the video.

I won't be at the home opener. My days of going to the home openers died when I was in my 20's, going to Brewers home openers when I lived in Wisconsin. There is no tailgating at Cubs games, so you can't fuel up with brats and italians cooked on grills dangerously close to every gas tank in the parking lot and drink your fill of beers stashed in your cooler before going into the game so that you can avoid those ridiculous beer prices. Nope, I'll watch the home opener in the comfort of my living room on the big screen and/or listen to it on the radio. (Because I'm a glutton for punishment and can't get enough of Ron Santo cryin' about not getting inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame...again!) I may get to a game later in the season when I won't need a winter coat.

Our household is still in mourning over the Cubs last season. Anastasia has vowed to not even tempt disappointment and will not root for the Cubbies. (But she will watch the game if I have it on when she walks in.) I'll still seek out a game and root for them and my son will even join me even though he claims to have gone to the dark side (White Sox) since we moved to the south burbs.

I'm not one of those (fools?) who after a few wins at the beginning of the season will claim that the Cubs will win it all. Not me. You know...those drunken doofusses they show on television who after a few wins at the beginning of the season who will adamantly state that THIS IS THE YEAR!

I'm not one of those people. I'll follow them and root for them and hope they win, but I will not state emphatically that THIS IS THE YEAR!

But I will go so far as to say...

I HOPE THIS IS THE YEAR!

  2. My Grandma is a HUGE cubs fan. You should hear a 90 year old curse out the bad plays! It's amusing.

The rest of my family are Sox fans.

I am Switzerland. I don't care one way or the other. They are both Chicago teams, so I support them both!

  3. @ Blueviolet, Harriet, Stacie - I hope they manage to get the game in today. I sure wouldn't want to be at the home opener waiting in the rain to find out if they'll play. That has to be the worst.

@ Kelly - I bet! I used to share season tickets with my ex-brother in law. Some of the seniors, 70+ in the stands were some of the most rabid fans. Switzerland, huh? lol!

  7. Oh, Lola, say it isn't so! A Cub's fan??? Why? I'm just teasing--I'm a Sox fan, but not a Cub's hater. I hope they can have a good season! I always wish them well in the playoffs and are disgusted with the rest of you when they choke. Let's hope it is a good season!!

You were right--the game yesterday was FREEZING!! Joe had the opportunity to go to the Cub's game Wednesday and turned it down--too cold!! One freezing game a week is enough he says.

  8. GO CUBS! I'm a long way away from Chicago now, the place where I was born, but you just can;t take that dream away from a Cubs fan. This is THE year! And if not... Oh well. Next year will be THE year. LOL

  9. Oh there is nothing like tailgating at Wrigley WAY NORTH. Go Cubbies. Maybe this year?

  10. One of my "bucket list" items is to see a Cubs game at Wrigley. I also wanted to see the Yanks at Yankee Stadium but now that is gone. I hope that Wrigley stays in place for a few more years.
