Thumbs...Up!

Some of you may recall this post How On Earth Am I Going to Get These Gifts Wrapped?. In it, I posted how December 16th I had smashed my left thumb with the snow thrower clutch bar. Here is that nifty, blurry photo that I posted 2 days later.
For the last 2 months I have had what can only be described as a flip-top/convertible thumb nail. The nail released from the nailbed, but was still firmly attached near the top of the nail. In order not to snag it on clothing and whatnot, I fashioned a strap with waterproof tape.

Last night I'd had enough. The nail was still hanging on by a small amount of skin at the top of the nail. I took cuticle scissors and carefully cut away the nail. This is what my new nail looks like, and the nail that came off. The new nail is deformed. There is a big ridge horizontally across the center of the nail and it looks bubbled up. It's also still sore. I'm sure I can look forward to losing yet another nail, as this new one does not look healthy. Fun.

TGIF! VGNO!

Photobucket
This has been National Library Week and I can't tell you how much I heart my village library. I was there yesterday to pick up a bunch of books on Bipolar Disorder in children and teens. I had just reserved them online in the wee hours of Wednesday night/Thursday morning and when I woke up Thursday morning I got an email letting me know my books had been pulled and were waiting for me. The librarians at my village library ROCK! (I do still complain that they are closed on Fridays and Sundays and close early on Saturdays, but I guess that's the price I pay for living where I live.)
Time For A Party Game!

If I Could Blog Back Time Thursdays - First Concert

Come join me for If I Could Blog Back Time Thursdays! We'll be taking time out to share some memories. We'll Blog Back Time with possible ways to right past wrongs or about how times have changed. We'll share childhood memories, school/work memories, family and friend memories.
Today's topic is: First Concert
Every year my Mom would take us to the Wisconsin State Fair and we attend the Grandstand shows. We'd see groups like B.J. Thomas, England Dan & John Ford Coley, Andy Gibb, Donny & Marie, K.C. & The Sunshine Band. I never really counted those as concerts. Sure they were, but my Mom went with my sister and I and it was just the Wisconsin State Fair. It wasn't the Milwaukee Auditorium and it wasn't the Milwaukee Arena.

My first real concert, was Rush, December 7, 1978. 38 Special opened for them. Tickets were a whopping $8.50!

It was our first concert without Mom accompanying us and it felt so grown-up to drive my sister and myself in my car. It was probably a good thing my Mom didn't go with us, considering the only concerts she took us to were family type shows. Rush was the first concert where I smelled smoke that wasn't cigarettes. We weren't smoking, we were too goody-two shoes for that.

It was an odd choice for a first concert, considering I really didn't know much of their music, but we still had a good time.

Cubs Home Opener - Go Cubs!

The Cubs go into their home opener with 4 Wins 2 Losses. Cubs won Sunday night 8 to 5. If you didn't watch the game, you missed an amazing catch by Reed Johnson (subbing for Milton Bradley). In the 5th inning Johnson robbed Prince Fielder of a home run. Johnson jumped up, reached his glove over the wall and grabbed it. Here is a link where you can watch the video.

I won't be at the home opener. My days of going to the home openers died when I was in my 20's, going to Brewers home openers when I lived in Wisconsin. There is no tailgating at Cubs games, so you can't fuel up with brats and italians cooked on grills dangerously close to every gas tank in the parking lot and drink your fill of beers stashed in your cooler before going into the game so that you can avoid those ridiculous beer prices. Nope, I'll watch the home opener in the comfort of my living room on the big screen and/or listen to it on the radio. (Because I'm a glutton for punishment and can't get enough of Ron Santo cryin' about not getting inducted into the Baseball Hall Of Fame...again!) I may get to a game later in the season when I won't need a winter coat.

Our household is still in mourning over the Cubs last season. Anastasia has vowed to not even tempt disappointment and will not root for the Cubbies. (But she will watch the game if I have it on when she walks in.) I'll still seek out a game and root for them and my son will even join me even though he claims to have gone to the dark side (White Sox) since we moved to the south burbs.

I'm not one of those (fools?) who after a few wins at the beginning of the season will claim that the Cubs will win it all. Not me. You know...those drunken doofusses they show on television who after a few wins at the beginning of the season who will adamantly state that THIS IS THE YEAR!

I'm not one of those people. I'll follow them and root for them and hope they win, but I will not state emphatically that THIS IS THE YEAR!

But I will go so far as to say...

I HOPE THIS IS THE YEAR!
