Dream birthday party....

Ok, so yeah, I don't really mean dream birthday party...I mean dream lesbian birthday party. 50th no less. Yes, Sunday was my birthday and the day of my party.

Yup! That's what I had. It was all women (thankfully...I went round and round with a friend who wanted to bring her creepy guy friend. Umm, NO. My party, I pick the guests.) And all but 1 were lesbians. We ate, discussed our impressions of what butch and femme are, and then we had a wet t-shirt contest! Yup! We turned on the sprinkler (the village with their watering rules be damned! It's my birthday!) and ran through it. There were 2 chickens who refused to do it, one who my gf ended up chasing with the sprinkler.

You say you think I'm joking, huh?

Nope. I've got photos and video which I will have up soon.

So I just thought I'd list a few random things I heard while at my party:

"So tomorrow you tell one of those straight girls that one of us single girls had their eye on them, and then tell Lola what they said so she can tell us."

"That's what SHE said."

"This woman at work told me that single day...everyone sees a cow, or an image of a cow every day. And then once someone's said it to you, you become more aware and notice it daily. And sure enough, now every day I notice a cow. (So now you thank me that you are going to be on cow alert for the next few days cuz you don't believe it either. So far today I have not seen a cow or cow image.)

"I bet you've cow tipped. Yeah, you look the type. You've cow tipped haven't you?" (Seriously! This was said after the cow a day story.)

Breaking Bad Season Premiere on AMC

Since getting satellite back (as part of a special deal from my phone company), I've been enjoying programs that I had caught at friend's houses here and there. One of those was Breaking Bad on AMC. Last week they re-ran the previous season and I recorded it on my DVR (woo hoo! I'm stepping into this century!). By the time the season premiere started I was all caught up.

If you've got it on your DVR and haven't watched it yet, you may want to go watch now and come back, because I don't want to spoil it for you, but I do want to discuss the episode, so be sure to come back.

I've always found this series very well written. Lots of plot twists and turns. Sure some of them were a bit predictable, like Jesse's girlfriend overdosing, but you couldn't say that about what followed with her father.

You certainly couldn't say that this show glamorizes drug dealing, or manufacture. If anything, it shows how evil it truly is. Sure, Walt's reasons for cooking meth are understandable. He has cancer and a new baby girl (along with a 16 year old son), and he wants to cash out big to provide for his family after he is gone. I don't know that any of us would choose that option, had we had the knowledge Walt does, but it makes for a compelling story.

I'm not a fan of gratuitous violence. In fact, I tend to not watch shows or movies that are violent. Past episodes have been violent, sure, but the season premiere seemed over the top to me. The methodical, incalculably cold, shocking way in which Gustavo Fring (played impeccably by Giancarlo Esposito) murders one of his henchman, literally almost had me losing my dinner. I was literally gagging, as if I were there and experienced it. I don't think I've ever had a reaction like that to a scene in a show or a movie.

Have you seen the show? Have you seen the episode? What do you think?

Happy 4th of July!

I haven't gone out to see fireworks, but we always have plenty in the hood. I got to see all the displays from Elk Grove Village, all the way home last night. I saw Elk Grove Village, Lisle, Lockport, Joliet and Mokena. I was riding home from visiting a friend in the hospital. She had surgery on Friday because a piercing near the top of her ear got infected and did not respond to the usual treatments. It was not MRSA, but it was as difficult to treat. Surgery went fine, but had nausea and such bad enough to have to go back in yesterday. Sux to be in the hospital for a holiday. Sending her positive energy and prayers and hoping she is released soon.

Friday got out of work early and went to buy a swimsuit. I think that's the fastest I've ever bought a swimsuit in my life. Tried on a one piece and a 2 piece and was in and out in less than 10 minutes! I got the 2 piece. Still can't believe it was so fast. Lol! Saturday we met up with my sister for swimming and dinner and yesterday we were off to a bbq. Today we are just chillin' at home.

I hope everyone is having a safe, happy 4th of July.

Happy Father's Day. This is part of a re-post from 2009:

This post is dedicated to my father. He would have been 80 this Halloween. He passed away 21 years ago. I had a very different relationship with my Father, than with my mother. (Lola's Diner - Today's Post Is Dedicated To My Mother).

I have my Father to thank for my handy, DIY skills. Whenever my Dad had a project, either in the house, or in the garage, I was his assistant. I resented that I was always his assistant, but my sister couldn’t remember the names of the tools (perhaps on purpose?) whereas, I always remembered. In the winter I froze my butt off handing him tools, bringing him beverages and basically standing around and listening to him swear. Lol! At least that was the case when he was working on the car. He insisted on doing his own oil changes. For all the aggravation he went through I always wondered if he wouldn’t be better off paying the gas station $9.95 (or whatever it was at that time). When my Dad got into a project that was over his head, he would send me across the street to get our neighbor. It was usually under the guise of borrowing a tool. Both my Dad and I knew if he sent me, the neighbor would bring it over himself and see if he needed any help.

When times were tough he always found a way to get things done, whether he did it himself or enlisted the assistance of a neighbor. I never recall him hiring a plumber. At the time I did not at all appreciate that time I spent with him in our garage. Of course now I appreciate it, having learned about tools and the time we spent together. When I got my learner's permit he had me rotate the tires on his car so I would know how to change a tire. At the time I really grumbled about it, but that lesson proved invaluable. I can't tell you how many tires I've changed flats.

I built on what my Dad taught me about tools. I think he would be incredibly impressed at my tool collection and the set of DIY mad skills I’ve learned. I still have his Circular Saw and use it often for projects. I laid ceramic tile in both bathrooms of my previous home, installed new toilets, sinks and vanities and replaced the kitchen cabinets.I've even replaced the gutters on my old garage and repaired the soffit and fascia.

When my Mother passed away my Father clearly changed. For the longest time he was just lost. He still went every Friday night to his favorite haunt and would go out to lunch at a local restaurant frequently. My Dad didn’t cook much, so since I was living at home, I started doing the cooking. During the summer he would occasionally grill out. That usually meant his famous “steak and nothing” meal. If the name isn’t obvious enough, it’s a meal of a big ass steak, and nothing else. No starch, no salad, no sides. Just steak in all of it’s glory! When my sister and I would come home from work (we worked at the same office) and smell the grill as we parked our cars, we’d look at each other and snicker “steak and nothing?” We would always be right. Today, as an homage to my Dad, we are having steak and nothing. It's a tradition I started with the kids a couple of years ago. They love it so much they ask for it often, but I only give in on Father's Day. I can't wait until they get home and ask what's for dinner and see their faces, their eyes as big as saucers.

There are times when I look at my kids and think, how much my Dad would have enjoyed this or that with them. Whenever I have projects to do around the house I do just as he did. I have one of my kids be my assistant. I'm hoping he's looking down and watching over his 2 beautiful grandchildren and proud of all the things he taught his daughter.

What do you remember most about your Father?

What is it with teens and summer...grrrr!

I am about to lose my mind. My kids are on summer break and for some reason they think that they can sit on their asses and do absolutely nothing all day.

Not only do they do absolutely nothing all day, they are cooking meals that are meant for dinner and messing up my kitchen even worse than the day before.

Today is day 2 of my strike. I can't wait until they leave tomorrow so I can clean and have the house stay clean for more than 5 minutes.

Last night one of the kids actually had the nerve to ask me when I was coming downstairs to do something about dinner. I said I wasn't coming down and I wasn't doing anything about dinner. (If they can find and cook dinner meals for lunch...wtf? Why can't they cook dinner? I work all day. There is plenty of food in the house.)

So I told them I was doing what they've been doing all week...
sitting on my ass doing nothing...
dead silence.
That's when I told them they could leave my room now.
Grrrrr!

Long lost twin...

I was at an engagement party over the weekend and I HAD to snap a pick of her. She was in the living room.

Hey Lin! I think I found your goose's long lost twin! Apparently yours did better for herself. I mean, she does have quite a bit fancier frock than the one I spied.
