Why did no one notify my wife

My wife has been helping her Mother’s 80 year old friend, Cathy. She picks up her mail from her post office box, shops for her groceries, delivers them, and puts them away. She has a key to her apartment and had to sign for the key with the apartment manager.

My wife heard from her a couple of times a month when she needed groceries. She hadn’t heard from her in a month and had been calling her cell phone, never reaching her. Not unusual, because Cathy would often forget to charge her cell phone, or it was out of reach. Before the last shopping trip she hadn’t heard from her and drove over to see if she was ok. She had fallen, couldn’t get up, and couldn’t reach her phone. My wife came home, got my son, and asked another tenant to help get her off the floor. I know what you’re thinking, she should be in a nursing home, retirement community, or living with someone. Cathy was stubborn and wanted to live in her own apartment, alone. Whenever she did get sent to a nursing home for Rehabilitation, she would get kicked out because she wanted to do what she wanted to do. She’d been kicked out of 3 nursing homes…that I know of.

My wife shopped for her about a month ago and hadn’t heard from her, couldn’t reach her since. Today I drove my wife over there to do a wellness check on our way to the store. Cathy’s car was parked where it had been. My wife knocked on the door, no answer, so she used her key. She opened the door to find Cathy’s belongings gone, and another tenant’s there. She immediately locked the door and we went to the rental office. It was closed, but she reached someone by phone who would not tell her anything. My wife has no contact information for any relatives. She had met Cathy’s sister when Cathy moved from a condo to this apartment, but didn’t think to exchange contact information.

What do you do in this situation? Thinking the worst, I started Googling. For future reference, if you want to find out if someone has passed away, go to
Legacy.com. It didn’t take long to find the obituary. Since her name was kind of common I used the listing of those who passed away before her, looking for her husband’s name. I did find the correct obituary. She passed away a month ago on October 9, 2021. The funeral home service was October 15th. Why couldn’t the rental office call my wife??? Or the nursing home that she apparently was at? The obituary listed her as having lived in a NW suburb, but her apartment was in a SW suburb, so she must have been in a nursing home. My wife still has a key to that apartment.

My brother-in-law has insisted for years that Cathy said she was leaving him some property in her will. I’m sure Cathy did say that, but that doesn’t mean it was true. She owned a lot of properties in the SW suburbs and at least one property we know of in Michigan. For years my wife took my son to one of the properties after every snowfall to shovel and salt the sidewalk. I’m sure if Cathy bequeathed any property or money to my brother-in-law or my wife her attorney would be required to find them and notify them.

It’s just really sad and frustrating. Had we known that she was in a nursing home we would have at least called her and asked about visitation rules and to ask if she needed anything. We had done that when she had been at other nursing homes. Cathy was in a nursing home during the early part of the pandemic, and had gotten kicked out and moved to a different one. Each time Cathy moved my wife regularly contacted her.

Sunday Stealing-Family

Funny the World".Welcome to Sunday Stealing. This feature originated and published on WTIT: The Blog. Here we will steal all types of questions from every corner of the blogosphere. Our promise to you is that we will work hard to find the most interesting and intelligent questions. Cheers to all of us thieves!

Stolen from Print/Discuss

1. How big is your immediate family? Who are the members? Four. Myself, my wife, and my 2 adult children.

2. Who are you closest to in your family? What kind of relationship do you have with that person? Is it like friendship? I would say all the members of my immediate family. That would be because I don’t speak to any members from my Mom’s side of the family and I have no idea where my Dad’s side of the family is. We used to see them infrequently when I was a kid, but after my Dad passed away and we sold the house we grew up in, no one had stayed in touch.

3. Which day of the year are you most likely to spend with your family? Since my daughter got her apartment we have been doing Sunday dinners there. My son wants Game Night this Sunday too.

4. As a child, did you go on family trips? What do you remember about those vacations? I only went on 1 family trip with my family. My Dad took us to meet a 99 year old woman who I don’t know who she was to my Dad. I did go on vacation to Florida with 2 aunts, a cousin, my sister, and my step grandmother. While Disney World was fun, I felt terribly uncomfortable because my Mom gave us explicit instructions not to ask for any souvenirs, or expensive food. Of course those people who took us insisted on buying us souvenirs. My Mom was a very proud woman and really didn’t want us going on the trip because it wasn’t something she could afford to pay for. I have no idea how the trip came to happen, nor do I know if my Mom contributed money for the trip. It was fun since we’d never gone there, but it felt really uncomfortable the entire trip because we really didn’t know those people other than seeing then at holidays.

5. Is there a black sheep in your family? What is different about them? Probably me. Because I’m a lesbian, and because I moved from a suburb of Milwaukee to the North side of Chicago. To my extended family on my Mom’s side Chicago was gangsters, Al Capone, etc. When I was growing up no one really stuck out to me as a black sheep…unless you count the aunt who had a child out of wedlock. Back then it was scandalous.

6. Do you know your extended family? How many of them have you met? I did up until the family reunion in 2015 that was the month before my gay wedding (which none of them attended even though all were invited). On my Mom’s side I met most of her step family. Grandma, aunts, uncles, 1st cousins, and maybe just a few 2nd cousins.

7. Have you ever been to a family reunion? How was it? I went to Anastasia’s family reunion and helped plan it. At least her family was friendly. The reunion on my Mom’s side was very uncomfortable. I took my wife and both of my adult children. We were gawked at the entire time. It was another scene of ‘watch the lesbians out of their element at a family reunion as the rest of the relatives ignore them.’ (Imagine a man’s voice from “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom”) We felt like caged animals at a zoo. Even my wife brought it up, so it wasn’t just me that felt it. Funny thing is, the only relatives who talked to my wife was the mother of the reunion planner who had dementia and only spoke Italian, and an aunt of mine who also had dementia. My wife only speaks and understands English.

8. Who are you most proud of among your relatives? Who do you look up to? I’m very proud of my daughter. She moved into a group home 7 years ago Monday, and moved into an apartment in an independent living community in July of this year. She lives alone, but they have community rooms with tv’s, pool tables, and a patio where everyone gets together. She know almost all the residents. A few of them keep to themselves. Her ex boyfriend lives there and has tried to get back with her, but she stands up for herself, says no, and has reported him to staff. All on her own. I found out after the fact. I looked up to my parents and miss them very much. The things my Mom did during hard times taught me what to do when I ran into hard times. I had more episodes than she did, but I learned from her how to get through them.

9 What characteristics have you inherited from your parents? Do you look like them? Do you behave like they do? Characteristics I inherited from my parents:  How to get through hard times, how to talk to anyone (my Mom always chatted up people at the store or bus stop. Never thought I’d ever do that, but I’ve been doing it for years now). How to be generous (I was never the Mom of the block, and never passed out treats and hugs to neighbor kids-not a safe thing in Chicago, but when my daughter lived in the group home I did all kinds of things…inexpensive Christmas gifts, I did a ball of gifts wrapped in cling wrap where you draw cards and pass it along unwrapping goodies until you lose your turn and pass it on, craft supplies, baking supplies, pizzas for parties.) I would say I look more like my Dad…facial features, so does my son. My Mom had olive skin, my sister and I were white as ghosts just like my Dad.

10. Does your family have any heirlooms? Will you inherit anything that has been in the family a long time? My parents passed away in 1984 and 1990. I took whatever I wanted to keep (my sister had already taken things without my knowledge, so after my attorney told me to change the locks to stop her, I took what I wanted. I didn’t even get the jewelry my Mom left to me in her will). I did get some great things, more sentimental value, which my sister wouldn’t have wanted anyway.

11. What happens to old people in your family? Do they live with younger family members or move to a retirement home? How would you prefer to spend your old age? Both of my parents passed away when I was in my 20’s. My Mom died suddenly, my Dad had cancer and went in to hospice care until he wanted to come home and live his last days at home with us. I have 1 aunt who went to a very nice retirement home that had dementia care. I would like to think I could spend it in my home, however, since I have a 2 story house I may need to sell and move to a 1 story house.

12. If you are married, how well do you get along with your in-laws? I get along with those that count. My father-in-law (whose 2nd wife is not a nice person, so I avoid her). I get along well with my brother-in-law. My wife’s step sister, who lives less than 2 miles from us has nothing to do with us. She fancies herself better than family and most other people. Her friend card was full when I tried to make friends with her. She thinks she’s better than everyone else. If you watched any of her videos on Facebook you would agree. My wife’s younger sister is on the outs with the rest of the family and I don’t have contact with her fiancée, who was my BFF until she didn’t plan my birthday party one year where she promised to arrange the entire thing, which my wife relied upon, and we ended up at home, just my wife and me, no party. You don’t tell someone’s spouse that you will take care of everything for a birthday party and then not do anything. She also made plans with me and ghosted me a lot. She played the I’m gonna see what else I could do, pick the best thing and not even bother to let me know she was canceling. She would basically hang out with me when she had nothing better to do. That’s not respectful and I don’t deserve to be treated like that.

13. What do people mean when they say, “you can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family”? You are born into your family, you don’t choose them. Friends come along and you mutually decide to be friends (unless your friend card is full. Bitter much? Yes, with reason. I’ve had 2 people actually use those words. One, my sister-in-law, the other a co-worker. It’s not like I expect to be joined at the hip, but hanging out once in awhile would be nice. It would also be respectful.) I don’t have any of my own friends. Out of all of my wife’s friends, there is an older couple that I am friends with. We had breakfast with them Friday and were invited for dinner and hanging out around the fire pit Saturday.

14. If you live far away from some members of your family, how do you keep in touch? How often do you communicate? 🤣🤣🤣 My sister still lives in Wisconsin. Apparently the road does not go from her house to mine, but it works fine my house to a restaurant near hers. I’ve never been in this house because…well…I think her husband is afraid of me. (I know he doesn’t like me because I showed up at their apartment about 30 years ago to get my sister because he wouldn’t let her leave. I stuck my foot in the door, pushed my way in, nearly knocking over his drunk ash and I got in his face. I ended up calling the police instead of getting my baseball bat out of my car. He seldom talks to me when I see him and he always leans back, like he’s afraid I’m gonna punch his face in. It’s really quite funny.) My sister sends me a message on Messenger once in awhile, but it’s not to chat, she’s either got information for me, or is checking up on a health concern of mine. She talks to my kids all the time, sometimes daily. I almost sent her a message after my doctor appointment Tuesday to tell her how it went and when I get the results of my 3rd round of blood work, but I stopped myself because if she doesn’t immediately hear from me after an appointment, she calls, texts, sends messages on Messenger, all multiple times. My wife has had to call her and tell her to stop it because twice I had surgery and I wasn’t even coherent and she was blowing up my phone. She is really obnoxious. My life is stressful enough without her pestering me. By the way, I feel completely justified in what I do because she didn’t even tell me last month that she was having surgery until 2 days before. No doubt because she didn’t want me pestering her. I don’t do that. If I don’t hear back in a reasonable amount of time, I attempt contact once.

15. Are you so close to any of your friends that you consider them to be like family? The only family I talk to on my side is my sister. I stopped speaking with my Mom’s side of the family after that offensive reunion, and none of them attended my wedding or reception. I’d say I’m pretty close to my wife’s side of the family (except for the nasty step mother-in-law, but my wife feels the same way about her).

(I guess I got kind of wordy because I haven’t participated in awhile.)

Stolen from Mosher’s Unimaginatively Edited Blog

1. First thing you wash in the shower? TMI.

2. What colour is your favourite hoodie?
Green. The inside is lined with Sherpa fabric which makes it warm and toasty.

3. Would you kiss the last person you kissed again?
Absolutely! It was my wife.

4. Do you plan outfits?
Sort of. In the warmer months it’s tshirts and cargo shorts, so I just have to coordinate colors. In the winter months I plan for warm days, typical days, and cold days. In the morning I pick the outfit accordingly.

5. How are you feeling RIGHT now?
Not fabulous. Wednesday I failed to look behind me to insure the chair was behind me. It was not, so I went down on my right hip/butt. It still hurts and makes it painful to sit in certain chairs.

6. What’s the closest thing to you that's red?
A Sterlite tub filled with clothes.

7. Tell me about the last dream you remember having?
I haven’t been dreaming lately. I only remember one in the last month where I woke up scared. I don’t remember the circumstances, just that I woke up scared.

8. Did you meet anybody new today?
Unless you count the waitress at the restaurant where we had breakfast, then no.

9. What are you craving right now?
I don’t really have a food craving now.

10. Do you floss?
Sometimes.

11. What comes to mind when I say cabbage?
Skinny soup. It’s that soup recipe that was all over Facebook last year. Every vegetable you have on hand, plus a can of diced tomatoes. Of course that includes cabbage. I can’t wait to make it.

12. Are you emotional?
I can be. Depends on what’s going on or what the situation is.

13. Have you ever counted to 1,000?
I’m sure I have. I count sheep or bottles of beer on the wall when I can’t sleep. Sometimes it’s more than 1,000.

14. Do you bite into your ice cream or just lick it?
Why would I bite into ice cream? Unless it’s an ice cream novelty like ice cream sandwiches, ice cream bars…why?

15. Do you like your hair?
Yes. I’m in need of a haircut now. I will probably cut it at home.

Random stuff

I took my daughter to a funeral yesterday. A woman from their Day Program passed away. They had a small service outside at a park district Pavillion. Today while I was out grocery shopping with the kids my daughter got a call from the guy that runs programs and activities for her apartment complex. He told her to stop by the office, he needed to see her. When we got back to her place she went to see him right away. More bad news. An older gentleman on her floor passed away. We think from Covid because he stopped hanging out on the first floor right about the time flyers were put on all the tenants doors that 1 person in the building had Covid. Such a nice guy. I always made sure I greeted him when I came and went from the building. He would hang out in the sitting area by the entrance most of the day. I think he was lonely. Other tenants hung out with him, sometimes they played cards.

I need to stop consulting Dr Google. It’s just making me freak out. I’m having symptoms of kidney function issues. Tomorrow I go for more labs and see my PCP Monday, and a Nephrologist on Wednesday. This is the reason I became a vegetarian 2 months ago next Wednesday. Plant protein is supposed to be easier on your kidneys. (Not a speck of meat has passed these lips.) I’ve also been analyzing food labels and looking up nutrition information on produce. I literally spent 4 hours at the grocery store today and didn’t buy much. I’m looking for foods that are low in all of the following:
Sodium
Potassium
Phosphorus
I also continue to look at carbs and fiber. I probably spent over 20 minutes analyzing labels for tortillas. It’s insane how much sodium some of them had. I went with corn street taco size tortillas and made quesadillas with queso cheese. I had 2 street taco sized quesadillas and a cup of red seedless grapes for dinner. Not joking. The only other things I had today were 1 blueberry muffin and a Matcha Green Tea drink at Starbucks. The medium size, whatever that’s called.
So labs tomorrow and they will send me home with a jug to collect…you know. After my labs we are meeting 1/2 of the older couple we are friends with at a Mexican joint. We have the same PCP, and he also has kidney issues, but he’s been told his diagnosis. I haven’t. I think he is further along with tests, nephrologist, and nutritionist appointments. I have to call the nutritionist Friday. I’ve just been going by what I’ve read, and really need to have the nutritionist educate me.

I got notification yesterday that  my driver’s license was reinstated. First thing I did after I opened the mail was grab my shoes and the Buick keys and left the house solo! Now that I can drive the Buick, the Blazer has a flat tire that can’t be repaired. Gah! Supposedly my brother-in-law is coming on Sunday to put the spare on so I can buy a pair of tires Monday. Neither my wife, nor I can change it because of back and knee issues. If I could remember how to use a scissors jack, I would instruct my son to do it. If I see my neighbor tomorrow I’ll ask if I can borrow his hydrologic jack. He’ll probably change it for me, and I will happily pay him.

Sunday Stealing-Facebook questions

Hi! Our host is Bev Sykes of the blog "Funny the World". . Welcome to Sunday Stealing. This feature originated and published on WTIT: The Blog. Stolen from Facebook

 1. Do you like bleu cheese? Love it! Never had it growing up.

2. Coke or Pepsi? Either, but it must be Diet.

3. Do you own a gun? Squirt gun.

4. Hot dogs or cheeseburgers? Cheeseburger (Vegetarian. Boca Burger. Beyond Meat has to be completely thawed and cooked or it’s gross. White Castle’s Impossible Sliders are da bomb! BK, Impossible Whopper tastes like it’s microwaved.)

5. Favorite type of food? Indian.

6. What do you drink in the morning? Coffee.

7. Can you do a 100 pushups? Probably not in my lifetime. 🤣

8. Tattoos? Zero.

9. Do you wear glasses? Yes.

10. Phobia?  Claustrophobia, but only when it comes to things like MRI machines. Brain MRI’s and radiation therapy while in an MRI-like machine where your head is put in a cage and fastened to the table will do that to a person. That being said, I welcome my annual checkups. Ativan is my friend.

11. Piercings? Closed. I had my ears pierced twice, but had issues both times.

12. Can you whistle? Just a regular whistle, not the fingers in your mouth kind.

13. Surgeries? 4.

14. Like gambling? Yes, but my system is made fun of. Winnings go in one pocket and stay there. Betting money in a different pocket and the amount is equal to what an affordable, fun night out costs. (So if I lose it I won’t lose more than I can afford.) I guess that would be “budget gambling”. 🤣

15. Do you like to dance? I love it. At my wedding 6 years ago I danced with my son all night. When he was little (4 years old and up) I’d take him on the dance floor at weddings. Little dude was a chick magnet! All the hotties would cut in to dance with him.

1.      When you looked at yourself in the mirror today, what was the first thing you thought? Damn I’m old. How is it my hair has gotten so gray?

2.      What shirt are you wearing? Sponge Bob Square Pants t-shirt.

3.      Do you label yourself? Yes. I’m a lesbian.

4.      What does your watch look like? I have a Men’s Citizen, silver with a blue face. I prefer Men’s watches because my hands are kinda large. I have a ladies Bulova I that’s teeny tiny and looks silly on my wrist.

5.      What were you doing at midnight last night? Reading.

6.      Last furry thing you touched? One of my cats, Maddux. He loves to do figure eights around your legs while you are in the powder room. Does anyone call it that anymore? I haven’t heard it in ages.

7.      Favourite age you have been so far? Forty. That’s when I came out and actually felt comfortable in my own skin. And I had the time of my life dating.

8.      What is your current desktop picture? I’m retired, so the only desk I have is in a computer armoire. No space for any pictures.

9.      If you had to choose between $1,000,000 or to be able to fly what would it be? I could use the money much more than the ability to fly.

10.  The last song you listened to? “Into the Great Wide Open” by Tom Petty.

11.  What do you do when vending machines steal your money? If the item didn’t fall down and I have more money I just buy another and usually they both fall down.

12.  Would you move for the person you loved? Absolutely. And I did once. But it’s ok because I love where I moved to.

13.  Name three things that you have on you at all times? Usually car keys, cell phone, and wallet. Car keys not so much for awhile. (See previous post.)

14.  What’s your favourite town/city? Chicago. I loved it so much I moved there not knowing anyone.

15.  Does anything hurt on your body right now? I have an awful headache, and the usual, back, shoulders. Right now the headache is winning. Not sure if it’s what left of the pneumonia, my allergies, or both.

Not being allowed to drive is like prison

The moral of this story is:
Take the eye exam at the DMV.

NEVER bring a Vision Report to the department of motor vehicles (DMV) when you are due for an eye exam. If they don’t like it, not filled out properly, exam not current enough you are screwed. I got a letter in July, went to the DMV for a state ID card and to take the exam. The clerk didn’t say anything about it, did my ID and sent me on my way. I didn’t think much of it and thought all was ok.

NOPE! Wednesday I got a letter saying my driver’s license was canceled and I needed to mail it to Springfield. It was very vague and gave some statute numbers which I looked up that were equally as vague. Thursday morning at 8am I called Springfield and was told the Vision Report was too old (hello, pandemic, I thought it would be ok) and I needed to get an eye exam, have the form filled out by the eye doctor and send it in. The woman was not nice when I asked questions and told me I must immediately mail my driver’s license to Springfield and I CANNOT drive until they get my Vision Report, deem it acceptable, process it, and mail me a letter stating my driver’s license has been reinstated, and I receive that letter. Apparently the woman hadn’t had her coffee yet. I was mildly hysterical, took a few minutes to calm down and called back and got a very pleasant woman. She didn’t have any better news, but she was more helpful. She told me since I was immediately going for an eye exam that I shouldn’t mail my driver’s license to Springfield. She also told me that I couldn’t just go to the local DMV and do the eye exam there, that I could only pay for an eye exam, have them fill out the report, mail it in and wait. Thank goodness she told me, otherwise I would have had my chauffeur drive me to the local DMV, wait in line, and be told I can’t do the eye exam there.

I killed some time calling my insurance to find out if an exam was covered. It was, but the Optomotrists were not near me. I looked up my optometrist, found they opened at 9am. I called at 9am, asked how much an exam was, $133 and begged for an appointment that day. The staff knew I went there regularly and got me an appointment at 11am. I had my chauffeur (my wife) drive me, had the exam (no change in my vision, no new eyeglasses needed), then had my chauffeur drive me to the post office.

I figure the time it takes my Vision Report to get to Springfield, approved, letter prepared, letter mailed, letter received, I will not be able to drive for at least 2 weeks. Considering they are all probably still working from home due to the pandemic, it could be longer. My Buick is supposed to go in the shop Tuesday. Normally my wife follows me, I drop it off, then she takes me to pick it up and I drive home. Noooo. I can’t drive! I am not getting a ticket for potentially $1,000 plus court costs. (I looked that up too. Thank you Google!) My luck is not very good right now what with my driver’s license being canceled and paying for an eye exam that I didn’t need, other than for the Vision Report, so I’m not going to tempt fate.

Where I live there is zero public transportation and I can’t afford an Uber. I will have to rely on my wife to take me where I want/need to go. She doesn’t leave the house much and sleeps very late. That is soooo not me. I get up fairly early, depending on my plans. Did I also mention that I can’t tolerate when she drives? She’s not a bad driver, she just has more than a bit of road rage. Yelling about the car behind us that really isn’t that close, or the car that may or may not dart into our path out of a parking lot, or the car that can’t tolerate following a car doing the actual posted speed limit and passes us. I can’t take this added stress. I’m afraid I’ll be incoherent and drooling in a day or so.

All I can think of is the things I can’t do and the places I can’t go on the spur of the moment. Some are:

Making/going to a couple medical related appointments.
Visiting my daughter’s at her apartment.
Going to the grocery store any time I want.
Going to garage sales on the weekend.
Sneaking drive-Thru lunch when I have my son help me grocery shop. (Yes, it’s always a vegetarian lunch for me.)
Embarrassing the heck out of my son by singing along to the radio and seat dancing while on the way to grocery shopping. (Hey, it’s the only kicks I get these days.)

There’s more I’m sure. But the point is that I have to rely on my wife to drive me. When I lived in Chicago I could walk out of my house, walk 1/4 of a block to a bus stop, catch a bus where I wanted to go, or catch a bus that went directly to an El train stop that would take me downtown. I went for over a year without a car and it didn’t bother me much. I worked downtown at the time so the bus to the El train stop was very convenient. This 2 weeks + is going to make me lose my mind!
